Finance
Bank accounts, statements and reconciliation
Add accounts with opening balances, import CSV statements, match lines to what explains them, write rules, transfer money and reconcile.
On this page
This is where Finance meets the bank. Accounts are the places your money is held; Money is every movement across them; statement import and matching keep the books and the bank in agreement; reconciliation proves it.

Add an account#
In Finance → Accounts, choose Add an account: a bank account, savings, cash box, card or payment provider, with a name and its opening balance. Each account gets its own account in your ledger, and the opening balance is posted, so the books and the account agree from day one.
Each account shows its book balance (what your records say) beside its bank balance (what the statement says). The two sides differ — the books need a look tells you something is unexplained.
Move money between accounts records a transfer between two of your own accounts, so it is not mistaken for income or spending.
Import a statement#
Download a CSV statement from your bank.
In Finance → Money → Import a statement, choose the account and upload the file.
Tell Unobits how the file writes dates, and which columns hold the date, description and amount.
Import. Anything already recorded is recognised and skipped, so importing overlapping statements never duplicates lines.
Explain every line#
Each imported line starts as At the bank, not recorded yet. Unobits then looks for what explains it, in this order:
- A posted entry that already explains it — usually a payment you recorded on an invoice or bill. The line is matched to it (Payment recorded and matched).
- An open document it settles — an unpaid invoice or bill for the same amount. Matching settles the document.
- Otherwise you book it to an account — for example bank fees to Bank charges.
This order matters: booking a line when the payment was already recorded would count the same money twice.
Rules#
Finance → Money → Rules books recurring lines for you. A rule says: when the line contains some text, for money going out, coming in or either way, book it to an account, optionally with a note. Rules apply to new imports and can be re-applied.
Reconcile#
Reconciliation proves an account agrees with the bank for a period.
Open the account and start a reconciliation.
Enter the date the statement ends on and its closing balance.
Unobits lists anything that is recorded, not at the bank yet and anything at the bank not yet explained. Record these first.
When every line is explained and the balance agrees to the cent, the reconciliation closes.
Reconciliation refuses rather than warns: it will not close with an unexplained line or a difference of even one cent. Reconciled lines are locked so they cannot be changed afterwards. Each account lists its past reconciliations.
Money#
Finance → Money shows every movement across every account — what came in and what went out — for the last 30 or 90 days or a period you choose, with the source of each.
